With the whirlwind of tasks that accompany moving into a new home, finding time to settle in and feel comfortable can be challenging.

As interior designers, we believe there is nothing more important than making your house feel like a home. That's why we've compiled some quick ideas to make the adjustment process a little easier.

1. Paint is your best friend

It may seem simple, but never underestimate the impact of a fresh lick of paint.

In just a weekend, you can completely transform your space, and at very little cost. Changing the colour scheme changes the tone, look and feel of the room altogether.

Sometimes, starting with a total blank slate with a neutral shade will help you see the potential of the space.

But there's no harm in going bold to completely infuse your personality. After all, paint can be very easily changed if you decide you don’t like it later.

Our top tip for families is to paint your children's bedrooms first. This simple step can help them feel more at home in their new space.

Plus, involving them can make the process more enjoyable and engaging, helping them feel excited about the move.

2. Create comfort with soft furnishings

It’s always our aim to make a client’s space feel warm and welcoming. An easy way to do this is by layering some beautiful soft furnishings.

Even if you’re working with a second-hand sofa or some questionable flooring you haven’t been able to change yet, trust us when we say soft furnishings can hide a thousand sins!

By layering cushions of varying textures, that old sofa can instantly look more inviting and by putting down a rug you can draw attention away from the floor.

If your bedroom lacks the luxurious feel of a 5-star hotel, consider upgrading with new bedding and a cosy throw for an instant improvement.

When choosing your soft furnishings, consider the colour scheme of the room and what textures you'll be using. This will help to make the whole space cohesive when it’s complete.

3. Infuse personality with wall hangings

Nothing says home like family photos and beloved artwork. Plus, they can be a great starting point for deciding the overall design direction.

We love taking inspiration from artwork when creating beautiful rooms, as it helps us build colour cohesion and pick out patterns and texture for the rest of the space.

One super quick way to get hanging is with Command Strips. You don’t have to worry about the commitment of hammering a nail into a wall, and can easily move anything around later.

If you would like to take the total stress away from decorating an entire space, why not let us do all the leg work for you for only £395 per room?

4. Don’t underestimate the impact of lighting

Lighting is always something that we see taken for granted, but it’s such an easy way to warm up a space and help you feel relaxed.

We understand that when it comes to statement ceiling fixtures or rewiring a whole room, it can get expensive and complicated, extremely fast.

To light your home quickly (and affordably) our pro design tip is to use plug-in table and floor lamps and scatter them about a room.

With the addition of warm light bulbs, these portable fixtures can instantly create an ambient environment.

Furthermore, you can even get rechargeable wall lights, which can simply be stuck to a wall and require no wires. Plus, you can move them about as many times as you need without having to worry about holes in the wall. It’s a win-win!

5. Breathe life into your home with houseplants

Did you know that plants are great mood boosters? They add vibrant pops of colour into your home whilst purifying the air.

If that’s not enough, it’s known that house plants are great for helping to reduce stress - something you may have a lot of when moving!

We love bringing together final touches as they really transform a room. Plus, house plants are so affordable, and if looked after correctly, can flourish for years.

We will always have some small plants and flowers on hand during home photoshoots as they instantly make a room feel more complete and homely.

6. Install stylish shelves

Shelves can be inexpensive and usually pretty speedy to put up. They can feature fond memories giving you a little spot in your new house infused with your personality from day one.

Consider using picture ledges to display a collection of artwork. Later you can easily switch it up with new pieces that suit your new colour scheme. (These are also perfect for your children’s bedrooms to display their art project of the week!)

If you’re not ready to drill into the walls, consider putting up a stand-alone shelving unit - they are often found at affordable prices and are great for storage. Plus, you can move it around as you decide upon the layout of your room.

7. Infuse your own scents

Interior design isn’t just about how it looks - we need to think about all of the senses.

With the use of scented candles or diffusers, you can bring your favourite scent into your new home.

Having familiar scents can help you to settle and make your new place feel like your own.

Besides, there’s nothing more cosy than a flickering candle to make your new room feel just a little warmer.
