Mary Berry voted most flantastic celebrity neighbour

7th December 2015

  • Mary Berry tops the list of the celebrities Brits most want to live next door to
  • UK has strong appetite for chefs, the preferred celebrity neighbour for 1 in 4 people
  • Katie Hopkins voted the celebrity people would least like to live next door
  • Queen of cakes Mary Berry is Britain’s dream celebrity neighbour, according to research from property website Zoopla.

Narrowly beating the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as the celeb most Brits would like to live next door to, The Great British Bake Off star also trounced fellow judge, Paul Hollywood, who secured just 3% of the vote.

Overall, chefs are the UK’s most desirable type of celebrity to have living next door, securing a quarter of the votes.

Adele topped the celebrity neighbours chart in London, whereas the Welsh voted for previous regal residents of Anglesey, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn proved unpopular in the North of England, coming bottom of the list in the region.

Reality TV stars were voted the least desirable type of celebrity to have as a neighbour, with over 40% of the public declaring that having these limelight loving celebrities living next door would be a recipe for disaster.

Ex-Apprentice candidate Katie Hopkins came bottom of the list nationwide, with a fifth of respondents citing the controversial columnist as the least desirable celebrity neighbour.

Zoopla’s research also looked at what makes the perfect neighbour, with safety conscious Brits deeming that keeping an eye on your home when you’re away (77%) and making sure their property is well maintained (63%) are the most important factors.

However, Brits are split over how friendly they would like their neighbours to be. Whilst 40% prefer that neighbours mind their own business, 38% think that the best neighbours should always stop and chew the fat.

The study found that sure-fire ways to wind up your neighbour are being noisy (92%), not keeping up with property maintenance (65%) and constant gossiping (39%).

Lawrence Hall of Zoopla commented: “The British public know what they want from a neighbour, and Mary Berry’s kind and trustworthy character – not to mention her infamous baking ability – clearly appeals. The glitz and glamour of having a pop star or reality TV personality next door might appeal to some, but our research shows that – famous or not – Brits want a neighbour they can rely on.”
