What is equestrian property?
Equestrian properties come with everything you need to keep horses. Their facilities usually include:

Grazing land like paddocks or fields
Driveway space for trailers
Close access to countryside and riding trails
When you’re searching for an equestrian property, check the size and quality of the stables. You'll want them to be well-built and insulated, and the British Horse Society (BHS) recommends a minimum size of 12 foot by 12 foot for the average horse to be comfortable.
In terms of how much land you need with an equestrian property, the BHS says you should have at least 1.5 acres of grazing land for each horse you own. You should also be able to split this to rotate grazing spots and give the grass a chance to grow.
Make sure you have enough space for your tack, feed and hay when you’re looking to buy an equestrian home. Many equestrian properties come with purpose-built outbuildings or barns that are well-suited to these purposes.
It’s also handy to have running water in your stables or barns so you can easily supply your horse with the 8-10 litres of water they drink each day.
Can anyone buy an equestrian property?
Yes, anyone can buy an equestrian property. In terms of the process, it’s much the same as buying any other home.
But there are a few extra things to think about.
One of those is how ‘ready-made’ you need your equestrian property to be - and what the associated costs are.
If you’re buying your first equestrian property, it’s much more straightforward to buy a home that’s already set up for horse ownership. It’ll save you the cost and complexity of building stables and other facilities, although the price of the property is likely to be higher.
You’ll also want to think about how an equestrian property’s location will impact your riding. Which is more important to you - access to good trails from your home? Or proximity to main roads so you can easily get to events?
